Grow your own at Bassaleg Allotments
Growing food locally is one of the best ways we can all help to reduce our carbon footprint – you can’t beat the taste of fresh produce, especially if you have grown it yourself! Owning an allotment is a great way to keep fit, enjoy the fresh air, make friends and grow your own favourite fruit and vegetables. If you’ve got room, you can even grow flowers for cutting!
Graig Community Council is responsible for overseeing the Bassaleg Allotment site. Situated between Caerphilly Road, The Griffin and Cowshed Lane in Bassaleg, the site has been a set of allotments for many years. The current site has 45 plots, varying in size from 1.5 to 10.4 perch, the average size being around 5 perch (1 perch = 25.3m2 or 5.03 x 5.03m).
Allotment holders grow a wide range of fruit and vegetables, with some adding flowers to their plots, both for colour and to encourage pollinators. There are an increasing number of plots using the no dig approach, pioneered by such gardeners as Charles Dowding and Huw Richards.
If you are unsure about taking on an allotment, the Association offers “taster plots”, allowing anyone new to gardening to have a go. There are also plenty of fellow gardeners on hand to offer advice.
The site is run on a daily basis by the Bassaleg Allotment Association. The Community Council supports the Allotment Association and provides basic amenities such as water and skips as necessary. The Community Council inspects the site twice a year to ensure standards are maintained and will issue warnings to plot holders where necessary.
