Waste & Recycling

Your household waste (black bin and orange top garden bin) is collected by Newport City Council.

Your recycling waste (green, blue and red bags plus brown food caddy) is collected by Wastesavers.

You can check your collection day, report missed collections, request bulky items collections etc. here.

Visiting The Tip

If you need to visit the household waste recycling centre (the "tip"), you must book a slot in advance. You can do that here.

Fly Tipping

Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste, bulky items, or hazardous materials onto land that has no license to accept it.

It is a serious criminal offense that can result in unlimited fines and prison sentences.

Reporting
You can report fly tipping directly to Newport City Council or via Fix My Street.

Private Land
Landowners are responsible for clearing waste dumped on their own property

Enforcement
The council actively monitors hotspots and can issue fixed penalty notices, prosecute offenders, or seize vehicles used in waste crimes. This includes the prosecution of the owners of the waste if it is traced back to their household.

Using 3rd Party Waste Companies

Unscrupulous waste companies and rogue traders undermine proper waste management by illegally dumping trash and leave property owners legally liable if traced, creating massive cleanup costs and severe environmental hazards.

To protect yourself and avoid hefty fines here are the most critical steps to take:

Check Credentials

Never hire a waste removal service without verifying their status. By law, anyone transporting waste must be registered with the government.

You can check the status of your waste removal company here.

Beware of Rogue Tactics
Be extremely cautious of services that use these common red flags:

  • "Too good to be true" prices: Unscrupulously low quotes usually mean your waste is being dumped illegally rather than taken to a proper facility.
  • Cash-only demands: Legitimate businesses provide paper trails and receipts.
  • Social media only presence: Be wary of operators offering services on social media (e.g., local Facebook groups) without a registered physical business address, website, or landline.
