Fly tipping is one of Newport City Councils biggest challenges. The roads around our city are being constantly targeted by illegal tippers, with The Gwent Levels a particularly unpleasant environment for such activities.
We all know fly tipping is illegal, but do we also know that if an illegal tip is traced back to a individual household, the owners of that property can, and will, be prosecuted.
Whether we need to dispose of a large electrical appliance, rubble from a house renovation or a bulky household item, the duty lies with the home owner to ensure the company used is legally registered.
As residents, what can we do?
Here are three important things:
Check your private contractor is legally registered to do so by asking to see a Waste Carriers Licence
Check the contractors details and keep a record in case your waste is found dumped illegally
Make sure you have a copy of the Waste Transfer Note
There is more information on the Newport City Council and Nature Resources Wales websites.
Community Council Collaboration
Graig Community Council is now part of a cross community council collaboration (Coedkernew, Marshfield, Michaelston-y-Fedw & Wentlooge) to tackle fly tipping. We will share more information through our Facebook Page in the coming weeks and months.
If you see any fly tipping, we ask that you report it as soon as possible to Newport City Council. There is a committed and efficient Waste Management Team working to keep our roads free from illegal tipping
If you have any questions regarding any aspect of fly tipping, or feel an illegal tip has not been dealt with, please contact Graig Community Council.
